Research Project: Assembly and Annotation of Alfalfa Genomes

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 5062-21500-001-022-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2025
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
Assemble high-quality, well-annotated genome sequences for alfalfa.

Approach:
Genome sequence data for eight diverse genotypes has been obtained to generate long continuous DNA sequences. Long range chromosome mapping data has been generated for the eight genotypes. Transcriptome data was obtained using RNAseq and Iso-seq. Genetic mapping populations will be generated for these genotypes and used for generating molecular markers. Assembly of the sequences into larger scaffolds will be done using the genetic maps and chromosome mapping data. Annotation of genes will be done using Maker-P software and transcriptome data. Genomes will be submitted to GenBank and Legume Information System.
