Research Project: Improving Our Understanding of Plant and Soil Processes Regulating Water and Nitrogen Use

Location: Water Management and Systems Research

Project Number: 3012-13210-001-021-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2025
End Date: Jul 14, 2026

Objective:
Long-term goals of this cooperative research project between USDA-ARS and Cooperator are: 1) to better understand the physiological responses of crop plants to drought and nitrogen availability, 2) to better understand soil process that make nitrogen available to plants under conditions of different soil moisture availability, and 3) to create and utilize experimental datasets which are used to validate and improve modeling of plant response to water stress and nitrogen availability.

Approach:
The Cooperator and USDA-ARS scientist will work closely together to analyze results from 2025 greenhouse and 2021-2024 field experiments to better understand plant and soil processes regulating water and nitrogen use and availability. Measurements will be planned and collected on a new 2025 field experiment with diverse sorghum genotypes grown at the USDA field site in Greeley, CO. A manuscript will be drafted from data and results will be presented at cooperative extension outreach events.
