Research Project: Calibration of Detector for Sucrose Concentration

Location: Sugarcane Research

Project Number: 6052-21000-018-010-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 22, 2022
End Date: Jul 21, 2027

Objective:
The objective is to calibrate a detector for sucrose using shredded cane from the Ardoyne Farm Juice Quality Laboratory. USDA will provide the sugarcane and the Cooperator will provide the detector and specialized personnel to run the equipment.

Approach:
The USDA-ARS, Sugarcane Research Unit in Houma, Louisiana, will shred cane derived from research plots at its Ardoyne Farm Juice Quality Laboratory in Schriever, Louisiana. In addition, ARS will determine the sucrose concentration of these samples using industry-based wet chemistry potocols. The Cooperator will analyze the samples through a second processing stream and results will be combined to establish the calibration curves.
