Research Project: Applying Multi-Model UAV Imaging System for Winter Survival and Biomass Breeding in Alfalfa

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 5062-12210-004-052-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2022
End Date: May 31, 2023

Objective:
Collecting objective phenotypic data with hyperspectral drone for winter survival, persistence, and biomass yield breeding.

Approach:
Using a UAV already owned by the cooperator, fly the hyperspectral drone 5 experiment fields at St Paul and Rosemount, Minnesota, in the fall of 2021, and the spring and summer of 2022, to collect image data. Fly twice each time. ARS and Cooperator will co-analyze the data, conduct the research with image recognition and deep learning algorithms, and develop and validate new methods to improve prediction accuracy for winter survival and biomass yield with remote sensing technology.
