Research Project: Utilization of Essential Oils as Biopesticides and Potato Sprouting Inhibitors

Location: Natural Products Utilization Research

Project Number: 6060-41000-015-003-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2022
End Date: Mar 31, 2025

Objective:
Due to the rise in resistance to common pesticides, there is an urgent need to develop new pesticides with new structures or modes of action. The objective of this collaboration is to evaluate essential oils as leads for new biopesticides and potato sprout inhibitors in order to enable from a technological standpoint new crops or new uses for existing crops.

Approach:
Cooperator will produce all essential oils and provide them to the USDA for evaluation of herbicidal and fungicidal activity. USDA will evaluate the analogs via in-house herbicide and fungicide screens. Cooperator will perform the potato sprout inhibition studies. USDA will also work to isolate and identify the specific chemical constituent responsible for the pesticidal and/or sprout inhibitory activity.
