Research Project: Development, Validation, and Deployment of Fungicide Resistance Markers for Botrytis Induced Diseases of Specialty Crops

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-21220-017-001-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 1, 2021
End Date: Apr 30, 2024

Objective:
Develop molecular markers to detect resistance to fungicides in Botrytis.

Approach:
1) Molecular markers to detect resistance to fungicides in Botrytis will be developed using traditional PCR-based approaches, sequencing (transcriptome and Sanger) and antibody detection system. a. Using data and samples previously collected, continue to develop molecular markers for resistance to fungicides classified as FRAC 2, 7 and 9 by the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee. b. Evaluate cross resistance to determine if marker is predictive of resistance and phenotypic of resistance. c. Develop anti-body marker for resistance to quinon outside inhibitors. d. Identify fludioxonil resistance targets. 2) Validate and deploy molecular markers. a. Test field samples for fungicide resistance (cultures). b. Test markers on field samples in two independent labs. c. Partner with California extension agent to collect samples and test proof of concept for putative antibody marker.
