Research Project: Developing Cover Crop Germplasm for Biological Nitrification Inhibition

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-11610-006-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2022
End Date: Jan 31, 2023

Objective:
Screen diverse annual ryegrass germplasm to identify potential sources and variation in biological nitrification inhibition as a climate resilient N2O mitigation strategy.

Approach:
Cooperator will screen diverse annual ryegrass germplasm, and germplasm from closely related species, for biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) in soil-based assays. Cooperator will identify and collect germplasm from public databases. Cooperator will evaluate accession influence on potential nitrification activity in rhizosphere soils to identify germplasm with high BNI activity. Rhizosphere soil samples will be frozen and stored for analysis of ammonia oxidizer populations by ARS to confirm that reductions in nitrification potential result from inhibition of ammonia oxidizers.
