Objective:
Long-term goals of this cooperative research project between USDA-ARS and Cooperator support two objectives, addressing the broad issue of agricultural water limitation in the semi-arid Great Plains:
1. Water-limited cropland production: a) better understand the physiological responses of crop plants to drought and nitrogen availability, b) better understand soil process that make nitrogen available to plants under conditions of different soil moisture availability, and c) create and utilize experimental datasets that are used to validate and improve modeling of plant response to water stress and nitrogen availability.
2. Semi-arid rangeland production: improve rangeland decision tools that represent the effects of soil type, topography, and rainfall distribution on forage production and composition in semi-arid regions.
Approach:
The Cooperator and USDA-ARS scientists will work closely together to design research and conduct greenhouse and/or field experiments, analyze data to better understand crop, soil and rangeland processes, and integrate this understanding in crop and rangeland models.
