Research Project: Broadly Protective Modified Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccines for Poultry

Location: Exotic & Emerging Avian Viral Diseases Research

Project Number: 6040-32000-081-006-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2020
End Date: May 30, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this collaborative study is to develop and compare modified live (MLV) avian influenza virus vaccines for use in poultry.

Approach:
a) To generate modified live avian influenza virus vaccines against H5, H7 and H9 subtypes of avian influenza viruses. b) Test safety and protection of poultry against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) challenge following modified live avian influenza virus vaccination. c) To determine the molecular signatures that render the influenza hemogglutinin (HA) of avian influenza viruses less immunogenic than other HA subtypes. d) To introduce molecular signatures on the HA gene segment to enhance immune responses, reduce viral fitness and serve as diagnostic markers.
