Research Interests 

The objectives of our multi-stage research are to: (1) develop technologies that generate commercially-viable biobased materials from protein co-products of cereal and soybean processing, and (2) develop novel extraction techniques and value-added applications for new protein-rich feedstocks, such as pennycress and alfalfa.

My specific research areas are:

  • Determination of pertinent fundamental properties (e.g., amino acid profile, molecular weights, protein classes, functionality) of protein products and identification of potential uses
  • Development and optimization of practical procedures for isolating the proteins
  • Modification of intrinsic properties and reactivity of protein products to improve performance in or customize for targeted applications

Our results will provide new fundamental knowledge on protein chemistries and technologies that can be used by other researches dealing with protein-based biomaterials. Outcomes of our research program are expected to ultimately create new and expanded markets for the protein coproducts from cereal and oilseed processing, and improve the economics for these biorefining industries.
