These minerals and the soil layers in which they form cause the characteristic landscapes present in desert areas. Many of the minerals present in desert areas are mined for use in various industries, including agriculture. Technical Abstract: A series of soil related terms that have application to desert studies are defined. These definitions will be included in a comprehensive, encyclopedia of deserts. Generally, the terms included in this manuscript cover dominant minerals and soil horizons present in arid and semi-arid areas. |
