Technical Abstract: Mechanisms by which Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) reduces vegetative and grain yield in cereal crops are not clearly understood. To see how BYDV affected accumulation of storage carbohydrate during a cold treatment which induces fructan accumulation, three oat cultivars were infected with the virus. Changes in glucose, fructose and sucrose as well as individual fructan isomers of degree of polymerization (DP) 3 to 5 and a mixture of isomers of DP>5 were monitored weekly for a three week period at 2C. Overall carbohydrate was reduced in infected plants but the proportion of sucrose, glucose, and fructose was higher while that of some fructan isomers was lower; some isomers were unchanged. Activities of invertase and SST in crude extracts of infected and noninfected plants were both reduced and those of FFT and hydrolase were unchanged. These results partially explain the pattern of fructan and sugar changes during cold hardening.
