Merr.] lines developed for forage production and five check cultivars developed for grain production were compared for growth and development at Ames, IA. Plants were grown in 76-cm rows and samples were collected biweekly. By 124 days after planting (DAP), forage soybeans yielded up to 16% more dry matter weight than Sherman, the check cultivar which had the highest yield. The forage lines were 29 to 61% taller than Biloxi, the tallest check cultivar. The best two lines relative to yield and lodging resistance were OR 14-13-2 and OR 14-11-2, which yielded 9616 and 9743 kg/ha, respectively. These lines were 1.91 and 1.99 m in height, with lodging scores 1.3 and 1.5, respectively (1 = upright and 5 = lodged). Their LAIs were 6.8 and 6.1, respectively, and lower than that of 'Hutcheson', 8.0, and higher than that of 'Sherman', 5.1. Reproductive stage of these lines started 88 DAP, whereas that of Sherman started 60 DAP. |
