One aspect of evaluation of plants is determining their chromosome numbers. This is particularly important in this genus because the number in cultivars ranges from 2n=14 to 2n=98. Because of possible sterility in progenies with unbalanced chromosome numbers, knowledge of the chromosome number is important to breeders when choosing parents. It is also an aid for identification of a cultivar. Counts are presented here for 90 cultivars and selections, 37 of which are new reports and 53 confirmations of previous reports. Technical Abstract: Chromosome numbers were determined for Rubus cultivars held at the USDA- ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Corvallis, OR. Of 90 cultivars and selections counted, 37 are new reports (five of which are corrections of previously published counts); 30 are confirmations of numbers which have been published as assumed based on parentage, but not actually counted; and 23 are confirmations of published numbers. The basic number is 7 and 2n counts range from 2x to 14x, including odd-ploids and aneuploids. |
