Interpretive Summary: The USDA-ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository maintains the national collection of blackberries and raspberries (genus Rubus). One aspect of evaluation of plants is determining their chromosome numbers. This is particularly important in this genus because the number in cultivars ranges from 2n=14 to 2n=98. Because of possible sterility in progenies with unbalanced chromosome numbers, knowledge of the chromosome number is important to breeders when choosing parents. It is also an aid for identification of a cultivar. Counts are presented here for 90 cultivars and selections, 37 of which are new reports and 53 confirmations of previous reports.

Technical Abstract: Chromosome numbers were determined for Rubus cultivars held at the USDA- ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Corvallis, OR. Of 90 cultivars and selections counted, 37 are new reports (five of which are corrections of previously published counts); 30 are confirmations of numbers which have been published as assumed based on parentage, but not actually counted; and 23 are confirmations of published numbers. The basic number is 7 and 2n counts range from 2x to 14x, including odd-ploids and aneuploids.
