Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The term vitamin K is used as a generic descriptor of 2-methyl-1,4- naphthoquinone and all derivatives of this compound that exhibit an antihemorrhagic activity in animals fed a vitamin K-deficient diet. This book chapter reviews the sources and utilization of vitamin K and its biochemical roles. There is also a discussion of the consequences of low intakes of vitamin K across the lifecycle, spanning from vitamin K-deficiency bleeding in early infancy through to chronic diseases associated with low vitamin K status in older adults.
