Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: NIP5, BOR1, NIP6, and WRKY6 genes were investigated for their role in boron deficiency in sugar beet, each with a proposed role in boron use in model plant species. All genes showed evidence of polymorphism in fragment size and gene expression in the target genomic DNA and cDNA libraries, with no consensus in size or expression pattern. Boron levels were significantly higher in plants in Boron-rich environments than those in Boron-starved environments, especially in the samples grown hydroponically. There was no consistent difference in the concentration of other macro- and micro-elements. The four identified genes have consistent changes in regulation in boron deficient environments, and suggest that homologues of Boron-affected genes in Arabidopsis exist in sugar beets. These four genes are likely linked to boron function in sugar beet.
