Denver, Colorado: Beet Sugar Development Foundation. Interpretive Summary:
Technical Abstract: The need continues within the sugarbeet industry for objective evaluations of commercial hybrids for their reaction to Cercospora beticola, the cause of Cercospora leaf spot in sugar beet. The nursery was inoculated with a liquid spore suspension of Cercospora beticola. One hundred and ninety three commercial entries and checks were received and tested in 2-row plots, replicated four times in a complete randomized block design. In addition, 30 Plant Introductions (PIs) from the USDA-ARS National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) (Garden Beet, Sugar Beet, Leaf Beet, Fodder Beet, and wild beet) were evaluated as well as 573 public breeding lines. Of the materials screened for NPGS, three accessions (PI 518429, PI 540691, and PI 604208) had ratings that were not significantly different from the resistant control at all rating dates. Two additional accessions, (PI 540583 and PI 546401) had average ratings that were not significantly different from the resistant control at four of the five rating dates. PI 546401, however, had very few plants, so ratings may not be reliable for this accession. Data and more information on the accessions evaluated, are available through the USDA-ARS GRIN database at http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs.
