Interpretive Summary: ‘Badillo’ is a light red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with resistance to multiple diseases that has been developed for release as a cultivar. Badillo is adapted to the humid tropics and was developed and released cooperatively by the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Agricultural Experiment Station and the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) in 2009. Badillo has resistance to a virus, Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV); a fungus, Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger, which causes the rust disease, and a bacteria, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye, that causes common bacterial blight disease. The adoption of Badillo by farmers will improve yield and seed quality of light red kidney beans produced in the Caribbean and potentially in other regions as well. In addition, Badillo will be an important source of bacterial blight resistance as it represents the first release of a light red kidney bean cultivar with enhanced levels of resistance to this important disease.

Technical Abstract: ‘Badillo’, Reg. No. CV-294, PI658490, a multiple disease resistant light red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar adapted to the humid tropics, was developed and released in 2009 cooperatively by the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Agricultural Experiment Station and the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS). Badillo has resistance to Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), rust caused by [Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger] and common bacterial blight [caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye]. The release and adoption of a disease resistant cultivar such as Badillo will improve yield and seed quality of light red kidney beans produced in the Caribbean. Badillo represents the first release of a light red kidney bean cultivar with enhanced levels of resistance to common bacterial blight.
