Interpretive Summary: Descriptions of three newly released native American pawpaw cultivars are presented. Each of these cultivars has produced well in grower trials. These cultivars are named for river drainages in eastern United States: the Allegheny, Potomac and Wabash. The native species of pawpaw is riparian and is frequently found in these river drainages. These cultivars can have fruit as large as 12 oz, depending on the management of the trees. These fruits ripen in mid to late September at test plots in Keedysville, Maryland. Technical Abstract: Descriptions of three newly released pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal] cultivars are presented. Each of these cultivars has produced well in grower trials. These cultivars are named for river drainages in eastern United States: the Allegheny, Potomac and Wabash. The native species of pawpaw is riparian and is frequently found in these river drainages. These cultivars can have fruit as large as 340 g, depending on the management of the trees. These fruits ripen in mid to late September at test plots in Keedysville, Maryland. |
