Interpretive Summary: Wind power has been used to pump water for centuries; however, the development of the modern wind turbine has allowed for more applications for water pumping. Electrical wind systems are now available and can be used to power electric power pumps which can pump water from greater depths or in higher volumes. The book includes chapters on farm windmills and a brief description of modern wind turbines and their design. Other chapters describe wind-electric pumping systems and systems used for irrigation. A chapter is included on project development and methodology to conduct economic comparisons. Finally, case studies are presented from Mexico and the United States. The book is available as a CD and is in a pdf format. Technical Abstract: Wind power has been used to pump water for centuries; however, the development of the modern wind turbine has allowed for more applications for water pumping. This book was written to give a complete overview of wind power water pumping and serve as a design guide for water pumping systems. The book has thirteen chapters and four appendices. Book chapters include: introduction, resource assessment, farm windmills, design changes, wind turbines, pumps, design-wind water pumping large systems, wind electric pumping, comparisons & economics, project development, case studies in Mexico, and case studies in the United States. Appendices include fundamentals of wind energy, manufacturers of mechanical systems, manufacturers of electrical systems, and a village project worksheet. |
