Technical Abstract: This chapter describes the microbiology of Brachyspira species, anaerobic spirochetes that inhabit the intestinal tracts of birds and mammals. The best known of the Brachyspira species are B. hyodysenteriae, agent of swine dysentery; B. pilosicoli, associated with human and animal colitis, B. alvinipulli, pathogen of chickens; and B. intermedia, swine pathogen.
