Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Members of the Class Mammalia, which includes most of the species commonly studied by immunologists, are so named for their mammae, Latin for mammary gland (MG). The MG supplies not only nutrients for the suckling neonate but also passive immune protection. While the MG lacks a true mucosa it is nevertheless important in mucosal immunity since its secretions can protect the offspring's mucosa and it shares certain properties with mucosal tissue.
