Interpretive Summary: The genus Cladosporium was established by the famous mycologist Link in 1816, and now contains over 750 names for species, subspecies, forms and varieties of microscopic fungi. Some of these species are amongst the most common microorganisms on earth, and are important as pathogens of plants, as saprophytes (decomposers), or as allergens. Many are 'true' Cladosporium species (i.e., they conform to the modern concept of this genus). Others, such as those species most associated with human and animal pathology, have been reassigned to other genera. Many names were applied to specimens that are inadequately studied, and there are taxonomic problems involving even some common Cladosporium species. For this reason, a check-list of names in Cladosporium is essential for scientists studying the genus. The list gives the person(s) ('author' or 'authors') who first published a given name, the citation for the publication in which the name originally appeared, information on the specimen ('type') studied by the author(s), and, when available, other useful information such as synonyms, illustrations, host & geographic range, and additional commentaries. The check-list is intended as a first step towards a comprehensive monograph of the genus Cladosporium.

Technical Abstract: Names of species and subspecific taxa referred to the hyphomycetous genus Cladosporium are listed. Citations for original descriptions, types, synonyms, teleomorphs (if known), references of important redescriptions in literature, illustrations and notes are given. This list contains data for 758 Cladosporium names, i.e., valid, invalid, legitimate and illegitimate species, varieties and formae as well as herbarium names.
