Interpretive Summary: Adult immersion tests are used to measure acaricide susceptibility in ticks. Generally, they are used in discriminating dose testing or as a full bioassay. Recently, there have been some reports that show that this test can be completed in 7 days rather than the traditional 6 weeks. We designed a series of experiments to determine if the 7 day test was a good indicator of resistance. The results show that this quicker test was not reliable for the detection of resistance. The results were highly variable. The traditional 6 week test is a better indicator of resistance for ticks.

Technical Abstract: Adult immersion tests (AITs) for acaricide susceptibility were conducted in a similar manner in Texas, USA, using the Muñoz strain and in Queensland, Australia, using the N-strain of B microplus. Data were collected on oviposition 7 d after exposure to acaricide and subjected to probit analysis. Most of the data provided a poor fit with the probit analysis model used and there were substantial differences in LC50 and LC99 between the two strains as tested in the respective laboratories.
