Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Recent breeding efforts focus on combining disease resistance attributes of traditional germplasm releases with the smooth-root traits that the more recent releases and breeding lines have. Thirteen entries from crosses among these types, as well as two commercial checks, and seven historically important lines were evaluated for their potential to supply additional genetic combinations useful for growers. Agronomic performance of experimental 'J-lines' was similar to traditional EL germplasm materials, but root conformation was intermediate between traditional smooth-root materials. Agronomic performance of historical germplasm was high. Two entries recovered from adverse long-term seed storage conditions also showed high performance.
