Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A great deal of attention is currently focused on the immunology and epidemiology of porcine reproductive syndrome (PRRS), pseudorabies (PR), and postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWA). These 3 diseases, caused by PRRS virus (PRRSV), PR virus (PRV), and porcine circovirus (PCV), respectively, have all received what might be considered a disproportionate amount of emphasis relative to other viral diseases of swine, but for different reasons; namely, a desire for eradication in the case of PR, better control in the case of PRRS, and a better understanding of clinical relevance in the case of PMWS. Step by step we are coming closer to these objectives, but we still have a long way to go. The purpose of this report is to provide a brief review of some of what is currently known about the immunology and epidemiology of PRRS, PR, and PMWS, with the hope that this information will assist veterinary practitioners in reducing the economic impact of these diseases on the swine industry.
