Field measurements of wind erosion consist of sensing or collecting samples of windblown particles or dust. The sediment may be of local or distant origin and be moving horizontally, particularly during intense dust storms, or vertically, as dust fall. This chapter describes various devices used to sample windblown particles and dust. This chapter describes different types of samplers and how well they sample windblown particles. Technical Abstract: Accurate, reliable and direct measurements of windblown sediment are needed to confirm and validate erosion models, assess the intensity of aeolian (wind related) processes in the environment, determine source and origin of pollutants, and for many other applications. Field measurements of wind erosion consist of sensing or collecting samples of windblown sediment that tmay be rolling (creep), or bouncing along the ground (saltation), or suspended in the atmosphere (suspension). The sediment may be of local or distant origin and be moving horizontally, particularly during intense dust storms, or vertically, as dust fall. This chapter describes current technology to sample windblown sediment. Horizontally and vertically configured samplers and sampling efficiency are described. |
