Technical Abstract: Citrus taxonomy and nomenclature is in a confused state. Different systems list from 16 up to 170 species. Ready hybridization between different species of Citrus and in some cases other genera within the Aurantioideae subfamily have contributed to the confusion. Recently, biochemical, numeric, and nucleotide based taxonomic studies have addressed the problems of citrus classification. Much of the data suggests that a three base species concept would be appropriate for the genus Citrus. However, there is at this time no widespread agreement in all aspects of citrus taxonomy.
