Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Feeding impairment frequently complicates the clinical course of females with Rett syndrome (RS). The neurophysiologic mechanisms that account for this abnormality have not been elucidated fully. This paper describes the functional characteristics of the oropharynx and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract in RS females and illustrates the pervasive nature of swallowing dysfunction and UGI dysmotility in this disorder. These finding raise the possibility that disturbances in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) may be causally related to the abnormalities of the UGI tract, and hence, the feeding impairment of RS females.
