Research Project: Modeling the Impacts of Environmental Stress on Soybean

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6070-11000-010-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2015
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research between the North Carolina State University and the USDA Agricultural Research Service is to incorporate climate change factors into crop growth models. The goals of the research are to model the effects of rising atmospheric ozone concentrations and the interactions of ozone with rising temperature.

Approach:
USDA-ARS scientists have developed new air exclusion system (AES) technology with the capacity to impose season-long treatments of elevated temperature and ozone concentrations in field plots. AES field plots will be used to grow soybeans to maturity with continuous monitoring of air and soil conditions to characterize the temperature and ozone throughout the season. Physiological parameters, biomass, and final yield data will be acquired to incorporate ozone as a factor in soybean crop models.
