Research Project: Enhancing Wheat Resistance and Production on Acidic Soils

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-049-005-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 29, 2026
End Date: Apr 28, 2027

Objective:
This cooperative research aims to 1) generate and assess genetic materials to explore the mechanisms behind wheat’s resistance to acidic soil conditions, 2) identify diagnostic molecular markers for introducing the resistant trait into sensitive elite wheat cultivars, and 3) develop wheat cultivars with improved quality traits. The requested funding will support ongoing efforts to develop advanced breeding tools to accelerate the creation of acid-soil-resistant wheat varieties.

Approach:
The collaboration will generate wheat genetic materials to assess the interactions of different resistance mechanisms and their effects on wheat performance and yields on acidic soils. The approaches involve using molecular, biochemical, genetic, and genomics tools for gene isolation, functional analysis, and the creation of molecular markers. Additionally, traditional breeding and genetic strategies will be employed to develop elite wheat cultivars that are better adapted to acidic soil conditions.
