Research Project: Seed Treatment to Reduce Plant Pathogens in Spinach Seed

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-019-075-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 15, 2025
End Date: May 15, 2026

Objective:
The objectives are to 1) test a seed treatment for its ability to reduce the viability of pathogens in vegetable seeds; and 2) write a scientific manuscript describing the research results.

Approach:
The seed treatment of nitrogen dioxide gas will be administered to vegetable seeds infested with fungal and bacterial plant pathogens. The seeds will be ground and plated on the appropriate growth media to determine the colony forming units present before and after treatments. Results will be statistically analyzed and reported in a written publication on the subject.
