Research Project: Developing Low-cost Mapping Technologies for Precision Nitrogen Management with Cover Crops - UoG

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-30400-001-084-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2026
End Date: Jun 30, 2029

Objective:
Develop a cover crop species and biomass mapping technology that integrates with a cover crop nitrogen calculator to provide variable rate nitrogen recommendations to farmers.

Approach:
Develop and deliver technical assistance and training to help farmers install camera systems on their equipment and use an app to adjust nitrogen application rates and distribution. Work with large-scale corn growers as key partners. Provide training to both NRCS staff and farmers through field days, webinars, and in-person train-the-trainer events.
