Research Project: Enhancing Soybean Meal Protein Quality Assessment: A Gastric Fluid Approach

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21000-044-037-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2025
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
Develop a simple procedure for determining the protein solubility of soybean meal (SBM) samples in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

Approach:
Develop a simple procedure for determining the protein solubility of SBM samples. By testing soybean meal (SBM) solubility under conditions resembling the digestive system of poultry and swine, we aim to provide more relevant information about protein quality. This approach will help us better understand how SBM proteins behave during digestion and their availability for absorption by animals. Our goal is to create a practical and meaningful method for assessing SBM protein solubility that considers the actual digestive environment of these animals. We believe our assay holds great promise for the industry and could potentially become a standard practice for assessing protein quality in animal feed formulations.
