Objective:
To develop management and genetic resistance strategies to mitigate or eliminate
the economic impact of major barley pests in Virginia, in particular virus
diseases, as well as Fusarium Head Blight, rusts, powdery mildew, net blotch, spot blotch, and scald. Further, to keep barley a viable option for U.S. growers, and enhance value-added job generating enterprises in the U.S.
Approach:
Cooperator will assess barley germplasm and varieties from other breeding programs as well as develop new germplasm having resistance to barley diseases using traditional as well as genotypic technology.
