Location: Dairy Forage Research
Project Number: 5090-21500-002-051-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2028
Objective:
The Cooperator will complete various objectives of cover crop breeding, management, and extension. Objectives include 1) understanding livestock toxicity of hairy vetch and establish grower best management practices and 2) selecting cereal rye for establishment under low moisture conditions.3) use rye as an herbicide without negatively impacting rotations with alfalfa and corn and to 4) utilize remote sensing drone and lidar imagery to improve the efficiency of selecting better rye varieties.
Approach:
The cooperator will 1) measure toxicity of hairy vetch among different growth stages, varieties, and forage processing methods; and 2) design a high-throughput growth chamber method to screen and select diverse cereal rye for germination capacity and early vigor under low moisture conditions.
