Research Project: Leveraging Genomics to Enhance the U.S. Soybean Quality Reputation

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21000-044-004-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2023

Objective:
In this one year project, we aim to increase the quality of our existing resources and expand our applied genomics tools and technologies to create a more comprehensive applied genomics framework. The research has a long term goal of informing the rapid development of new soybean varieties that combine quality oil and meal while maintaining genetic gain for seed yield.

Approach:
Our applied genomics team built a foundation of soybean genomic variation that facilitated a deep understanding of molecular genetic diversity in soybean varieties. In prior USB projects (FY19-FY21 and FY22) we developed a reference panel of 1066 diverse soybeans with new interactive tools for the soybean research community that enabled incorporation of knowledge gained from genomics data into molecular breeding programs (https://soykb.org). We propose to expand our applied soybean genomics program to target more complex traits and engage the soybean research community to utilize our new tools and technologies to explore novel paths to enhance soybean seed quality and agronomics that also meet market demands. Our newly developed interactive tools are currently freely available online to researchers on the Soybean Knowledge Base (SoyKB) platform.
