Research Project: Genomics of Fungi Associated with Invasive Invertebrates

Location: Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research

Project Number: 8062-22410-007-026-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Establishing a new cooperative agreement to continue collaboration on research investigating genomes of microbes associated with invasive invertebrate plant pathogens (Asian giant hornet and potato and soybean cyst nematodes). The CA will provide support for personnel to continue the work and funding for materials and laboratory services for genome sequencing and computational resources and analysis for the project.

Approach:
The research will: 1) identify microbes (particularly fungi) associated with invasive pests using both culturing and sequencing approaches, 2) sequence the genomes of several key taxa identified. The genomes will be analyzed for functional gene content to identify bioinformatically candidate enzymes, bioactive peptides, or receptors that could be utilized for targeted for management of these pests.
