Research Project: Impact of Production Systems on Insect Pressure in the Mississippi Delta

Location: Sustainable Water Management Research

Project Number: 6066-13000-006-018-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 27, 2021
End Date: Sep 26, 2023

Objective:
Examine the impact of various production systems, such as irrigation method, irrigation source, cover crop, and water management practices on: 1. Insect pressure on row crops in the Mississippi Delta. 2. Ensure that changes made to enhance groundwater management do not adversely impact insect pest management. 3. Ensure that changes in groundwater management strategy does not adversely impact beneficial insects.

Approach:
ARS research plots managed as part of on-going research into groundwater management will be utilized for these studies. Plots will vary from in size up to approximately 50 acres in with various cover crop, irrigation management techniques, and water sources. Row crops may include cotton, rice, corn, and soybean depending on the on-going research which is being conducted. Crops will be surveyed periodically for determining the amount and type of insect pressure. Insect pest management practice guidance will be conveyed between collaborators for incorporation into ongoing research projects.
