Research Project: Relating Wheat Genotypes and Phenotypes

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6070-22000-019-017-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2021
End Date: Jul 30, 2026

Objective:
1. Applying genomic analysis to multi-environment yield trials to determine role of major genes for phenology on genomic prediction for grain yield. 2. Identifying genes controlling epicuticular wax synthesis in regional wheat germplasm and developing molecular markers. 3. Analysis of exome capture of US wheat to support breeding programs.

Approach:
Approach Obj 1: Genotypic and phenotypic data from collaborative testing nurseries will be added to database and curated. Analysis will be done using appropriate models. Approach Obj 2. Bi-parental populations will be genotyped and evaluated for glaucousness in the field. Heterogeneous inbred families or HIFs will be developed for each QTL. KASP markers flanking the target QTL region will be developed to characterize segregating progeny from each HIF. Informative recombinants will be tested in highly replicated field trials. Candidate genes will be tested using RNA sequencing. Approach Obj 3. Analysis will be performed for Exome capture data of U.S. wheat lines to identify signatures of selection in different production regions. Genomic regions under selection will be related to traits of interest.
