Research Project: Cryopreservation of Model Organisms

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-31000-007-007-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 6, 2018
End Date: Aug 5, 2023

Objective:
To provide funding to the USDA, ARS, NLGRP in Fort Collins, CO, for safe storage of cryopreserved materials of ORIP/Division of Comparative Medicine-supported Resource Centers. The NLGRP will store a back-up collection of over 19,600 Caenorhabditis elegans strains from the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC) and from the Division of Comparative Medicine-ORIP supported resources (Centers). The NLGRP, with the cooperation of the CGC, will develop a database exchange mechanism which will be used to track and locate the off-site material and display records. The CGC will continue to accrue and send samples from newly acquired lines to the NLGRP.

Approach:
The NLGRP has agreed to store a back-up collection of over 18,000 Caenorhabditis elegans strains from the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC) and from the Division of Comparative Medicine-ORIP supported resources. At present, the strains are frozen at the CGC were shipped to the NLGRP in vials and stored in cryotanks (cryogenic tanks) that are auto filled, auto alarmed, routinely inspected and under 24/7 surveillance in secure facilities. The NLGRP, with the cooperation of the CGC, will develop a database exchange mechanism which will be used to track and locate the off-site material and display records. The CGC will continue to accrue and send samples from newly acquired lines to the NLGRP. Maintenance and associated cost for maintaining the collection at NLGRP will be provided by ORIP.
