Research Project: Computational Genomic Assessment of Gene Editing Fidelity

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-050-008-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 15, 2020
End Date: May 14, 2024

Objective:
Whole genome analysis of gene editing on crop plants to determine whether genetic modification from this recently developed technology results in unanticipated consequences to the genome or genome outputs, including but not limited to, gene expression, metabolism or specific relevant traits.

Approach:
Genome-scale analysis of transcriptome activity, small RNA accumulation, metabolome profiles and/or genome sequences of edited crop genomes to assess unintended outcomes including off target modifications. DNA sequence annotation and/or assembly may be required depending on target species. Genetically modified and control plants, possibly following applied variations in conditions will be the major subjects of study.
