Research Project: Standards Development for Phenotypes and Pathway Resource for Sorghum

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-044-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2018
End Date: May 31, 2023

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project are to develop, adopt and implement resources to support sorghum data management, focusing on standard development and stewardship of sorghum gene function, pathways and phenotypes.

Approach:
Technological improvements in sequencing, imaging and robotics, are supporting unprecedented opportunities to generate data associated with any organism. While each of these data points provide value, the ability to integrate across these provide unique insights into how an organism develops and responds to its environment. In this proposal, we will focus on stewardship of sorghum data as part of the new community sorghum portal SorghumBase. This will include development of standard formats for exchange of genomics, genetics and phenotype data. The standards will include controlled vocabularies for describing the data, standard data formats for exchange and access to the information, including the use of the Reactome, Ensembl and Gramene infrastructure.
