Research Project: Mutational Analysis of Inhibitory Extract from Serratia Marcescens N4-5

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21220-181-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 25, 2017
End Date: Sep 24, 2020

Objective:
1) Annotate the genome of Serratia marcescens N4-5; 2) map transposon insertion sites within the genome of S. marcescens N4-5; and 3) identify genes inactivated by transposon mutagenesis.

Approach:
All genes within the genome of Serratia marcescens N4-5 will be identified using bioinformatic approaches. Genes inactivated by transposon mutagenesis in mutants of this bacterium that no longer produce inhibitory extracts will be identified using bioinformatic approaches. This bioinformatic work coupled with the biochemical analysis performed by the ARS collaborator will result in identification of biochemicals produced by N4-5 that are inhibitory to soil-borne plant pathogens.
