Research Project: Effects of Commensal Bacteria on the Ecology and Development of the Chicken Intestinal Tract

Location: Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research

Project Number: 5030-31320-004-020-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 12, 2017
End Date: Aug 11, 2020

Objective:
Evaluate environmental and host influences on gut bacterial ecological niches within the poultry intestinal tract.

Approach:
Hatch eggs under germ-free and conventional conditions to evaluate the role of commensal micro-organisms. We will define the contribution of bacteria from the egg surface on the colonization and development of the microbiota in growing birds using bacterial culturing and DNA/RNA sequencing techniques.
