Research Project: Building Genetic and Trait Resources for Tropical Crops

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-040-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 19, 2025
End Date: Sep 18, 2027

Objective:
The project will be utilized to support building genetic resources for a variety of tropical crops to support stakeholder driven priorities including, mango, avocado, sugar cane, okra, ornamentals and others. Development of genetic resources are targeted for understanding traits of importance to growers and consumers and building tools to enable advanced breeding techniques to deliver improved germplasm for breeding targets. This project will support key initiatives in developing genetic resources within the USDA-ARS National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) collections

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to: 1. Obtain leaf tissues for critical materials targeted for genome sequencing. 2. Perform flow cytometry to obtain genome size estimates on selected materials. 3. Maintain and grow selected materials to obtain seed and collect trait information on selected materials. 4. Deposit collected trait information into corresponding databases. 5. Support genome analyses on sequencing data and investigating genetic basis for traits of interest. 6. Prepare manuscripts and deliver products to stakeholders.
