Research Project: Deployment of Computer Vision Models for Assessing Diseased Citrus Fruit

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-039-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 11, 2025
End Date: Jul 10, 2027

Objective:
Deploy the previously developed computer vision model for measuring citrus fruit characteristics infected with Huanglongbing (HLB) disease or citrus greening. Investigate integration and implementation strategies to best serve multiple stakeholder communities, including integration into data management software. Develop tutorials and training materials for stakeholder communities and provide technical assistance. Continue to investigate modifying the computer vision models for early disease detection, whole plant detection, and edge deployment.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to deploy citrus phenotyping tools by: 1. Develop deployment plan that allows model use at multiple scales (single image, multiple image, automated database integration). 2. Organize ontology to support multiple trait detection from images with computer vision model. 3. Deploy single-image method. 4. Deploy multi-image method. 5. Deploy automated database integrated method. 6. Initiate and train collaborators in data management strategies for collecting field data systematically. 7. Investigate how to modify computer vision models for edge deployment. 7. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
