Research Project: Applying Novel Genomic Methods for Quantifying Insecticide Resistance Year 1

Location: Tropical Pest Genetics and Molecular Biology Research Unit

Project Number: 2040-22430-028-045-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2025
End Date: Nov 30, 2026

Objective:
Characterize spinosad resistance alleles in known resistant melon fly populations for the purpose of screening for these alleles in wild populations. Assess the prevalence and geographic distribution of insecticide resistance alleles in wild Hawaii melon fly in year 1.

Approach:
Sequence susceptible, resistant, and wild melon fly. Identify genomic variants associated with spinosad resistance in melon fly. Calculate allele frequency of resistance alleles in wild populations. Measure allele frequency over subsequent years. Expand to other species.
