Location: Sugarbeet Research
Project Number: 3060-21000-045-028-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 1, 2024
End Date: Dec 30, 2026
Objective:
To understand the impact of various sugar beet mixtures of BvCR4 varieties and CLS-susceptible varieties under variable fungicide regime to a) monitor the epidemiological progress of CLS; b) assess the efficacy of reduced fungicide applications for managing CLS; c) assess population dynamics and genetic diversity via eight SSR markers. This project studies the impact of using mixtures of sugarbeet genetics to combat the disease Cercospora leaf spot, which will provide a cost-effective means to manage this disease for sugar beet farmers.
Approach:
The cooperator will carry out the following: 1) Evaluate varietal mixtures of CR+ and CLS-susceptible varieties under field conditions to determine the impact on CLS disease severity and also utilize reduced fungicide program with one DMI application and compare this to the nontreated control. 2) C. beticola isolates will be collected from the plots and genetic diversity is assessed using existing polymorphic microsatellite markers.
