Research Project: SSBRI: Using Nanotechnology to Enhance Fungicide Efficacy and Duration for Sugarbeet Disease Control

Location: Sugarbeet Research

Project Number: 3060-21000-045-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2025

Objective:
(1) Develop cellulose nanocrystals with trapped metal nanoparticles (CNC-NPs); (2) Evaluate the efficacy of CNC-NPs on Cercospora leaf spot; and (3) Investigate phytotoxicity of CNC-NPs on sugarbeet.

Approach:
CNC-NPs will be synthesized. CNC-NPs will be characterized by UV-Vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Hydrodynamic diameters of CNC-NPs will be measured using dynamic light scattering. For Objective 2, the effect of CNC-NPs on the in vitro growth of Cercospora beticola will be obtained. CNC-NPs will be applied to C. beticola-inoculated plants in greenhouse assays at three different concentrations to test their efficacy.
